Sponsored Parent (Temporary) Visa (subclass 870) — Visa2AU

A temporary family pathway that can allow eligible parents to visit Australia for a longer period when sponsored by an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen.

The sponsorship must be approved before the visa application is lodged. The visa is temporary and does not itself lead to permanent residence. Parent visa options should be compared carefully because capping, queueing, sponsorship and family circumstances can materially change the strategy.

At a glance

  • Temporary parent pathway for stays of up to 3 or 5 years, subject to the visa grant
  • Sponsor approval is required before the visa application
  • Applications are lodged online through ImmiAccount
  • The visa does not provide a direct pathway to permanent residence

Key planning points

  • Confirm the sponsor and parent relationship meets the relevant requirements
  • Plan timing around sponsorship approval and the visa application window
  • Compare subclass 870 with Visitor and permanent Parent visa options
  • Prepare evidence for identity, relationship, health, character and financial requirements

Rules, caps, charges and processing arrangements can change. See the Department of Home Affairs Sponsored Parent visa page for current requirements, then speak with Visa2AU about the right family strategy.
